Farmland Birds Pictures

Here is a photo selection of some of the species of farmland bird which have been identified on our farm. Whilst farmland is their preferred habitat, they can occasionally be seen in gardens.

Tawny Owl. About the size of a pigeon. Nocturnal and often heard calling at night.
Barn Owl. A distinctive heart shaped face and beautiful pale plumage.Often seen hunting at dusk,and sometimes during the day.
Little Owl. Often seen during the day. It bobs its head when alarmed or excited.
Short Eared Owl. With distinctive yellow eyes, they are commonly seen hunting during the day.
Buzzard. Most often seen soaring on up-swept wings.Now the commonest UK bird of prey
Kestrel. With pointed wings and long tail, frequently seen hovering beside roadside verges
Grey (English) Partridge. Their success is threatened by low chick survival. Fly in 'coveys' with whirring wing sounds
Sparrowhawk. Small birds who spot a Sparrowhawk will send out warning calls. They are fast and well suited to hunting in gardens
Red Legged ( French) Partridge. Larger than the Grey Partridge with characteristic white chin and throat patch.
